Below is a chart listing all hurricane activity from 1900-1996 in th United States to help put things in perspective for you. If you notice, New York has had more major hurricanes in the last 100yrs than South Carolina.

Under the column labeled 'Category Number' are numbers indicating how many hurricanes of that category have struck the indicated area during the period from 1900 to 1996. For example, the entire state of New York has endured three Category 1 hurricanes, one Category 2 hurricane, five Category 3 hurricanes, and NO Category 4 or 5 hurricanes. | For example, the entire state of New Jersey has endured one Category 1 hurricane, no Category 2 hurricanes, no Category 3 hurricanes, and NO Category 4 or 5 hurricanes. |
